Week 3 – Flickr Assignment
June 8, 2008 — Rebecca HedreenFlickr Assignment:
1.If you don’t have one, sign up for a Flickr account: http://www.flickr.com/ (If you already have an account with a similar service, you can probably use that, just be sure to post a link in the comments.)
2.Add some photos. If you have a digital camera, this is easy. If you don’t, and don’t have any digital images of your own, try one of the following:
a.Use the Creative Commons site (http://www.creativecommons.org/ ) to find some images that you can use freely. Choose ones with licenses that allow you to modify the works. You can find images elsewhere, but please only use those for which you have permission to use and modify.
b.Use the Picnik plugin or bookmarklet (http://www.picnik.com/info/tools ) to take screenshots from the web.
c.Scan some photos to your hard drive and upload them.
3.Use one of fd’s Flickr Toys (http://bighugelabs.com/flickr/) to produce something that you could use in a library. This image you use must be in your Flickr account, or on your hard drive. Not all the “toys” are appropriate (if you have an idea, but aren’t sure if it’s appropriate, ask.) The posters, calendars, cards, covers, slideshows, and captioners could all work well. You can either link directly to your Flickr account in the Toys, or download from Flickr then upload the image to the Toys separately.
4.Post the resulting image to Flickr and tag it using the course tag (and whatever else you want to use). Write about how you’d use this image at your library in your blog.

Rebecca I completed a project last summer for ILS Public Relations entitled “Partners for Progress.” It involved photo’s that I had taken specifically for the project. Is it appropriate/do I have your consent to do something with the photo’s for the Flickr project?

zygelle/Kathi: As long as you have rights to the photos, go ahead. I do want to emphasize legalities for this assignment, I’ll be posting about that in a bit. While most uses within a class can easily be classified as fair use, and most of us will be working for non-profit libraries:
1) that doesn’t give us full rights to do whatever we want with other people’s work;
2) some of us aren’t in those positions and do have to be more careful;
3) we should be acting as models for our patrons.
I (as an individual professional) do have some issues with the current copyright system, but it’s what we have now and, at the very least, you should understand the system you are protesting, should you choose to do that.

Hi Rebecca,
I wonder if I it is possible to add photos from Egypt like Pyramids, Sphinx, Alexandrina Library, and various family photos?
Please advise.
Thanks.
Ahmed

Ahmed, if they are your photos or you have permission, go ahead. If they aren’t yours, you should specify who took them, or at least that you didn’t. My personal policy on Flickr is to post my own photos with a CC license, but to post other people’s work with an “All rights reserved” copyright statement and a note about who made the image.
As far as family photos, just make sure that your family doesn’t mind!

The pictures I have posted so far are of me, which I thought would help put a face to my name since I still cannot get the Avatar in Edublogs to upload my photo — but I will keep trying.

Rebecca,
Thank you. If it is convenient, I will stop by your office at about 4:00 today.
With appreciation.

Under the Calendar link at the top of the page, I’ve put in my Reference Desk schedule. You can catch me on the desk during those times, and I should be around just before and just after, unless I have a meeting. Also, you can check my contact page: http://home.southernct.edu/~hedreenr1/contact.html
If the chat box indicates that I am online, I should be in my office. I might not be able to respond right away, but I should be around.

Rebecca..I used family in the photo’s for the project. In the end I will not use them. I am not comfortable with the creative commons options and some of the pictures of the small chiddren are terrific (if I must say so) and I do not feel comfortable.

For some reason, del.icio.us seems to be temperamental about showing my tags, so I am going to post a wiki about podcasts that I found on the web. It seems to have a good deal of information and links in it.

Like Kathi, I was uncomfortable with putting pictures of my kids on the site, so I stuck with some general photos from our trip to Cape Cod last year.
As for how I could use these images in the library, one of the aspects of our public library’s summer reading program is “Where Did You Go This Summer?” Kids are encouraged to send postcards from their trips to the library and at the end of the summer, all will be displayed on a mural. Something similar to that could be done with 2.0 technology, where kids/teens/adults could submit photos to the library website and the library could feature them on a Flickr account. Along with the photos, it could also have recommended reading for those destinations, i.e. books that have that location as the setting or authors from that city.

Hi all,
here is a link my first flickr set:

I took these pictures at a fun school book fair at Barnes & Noble, where I work.

I’m so glad that people are *thinking* about privacy issues and these services. Whichever way you decide to go about posting your photographs, it’s especially important to think about all the issues, and to help our patrons make their own decisions. Personally, I cringe when I come across a photo of a child, with name and location.
Flickr has other options. It is possible to make a photo visible to only family and/or friends (who have Flickr accounts). Of course, anything that you intend to use for this course has to be public, but you don’t have to choose that option for other photos. I’ve made sets from family events public for a short time, so that family can download the photos, and then changed them to private. Also, if you don’t tag photos with general terms, or don’t tag them at all, other people are very unlikely to find them without your specific URL.
By the way, you don’t have to use the Creative Commons options for your photos. You can make them All Rights Reserved, what we think of as “normal” copyright. The only time you can’t do that is if you are modifying an image that someone else has marked as Creative Commons “Share Alike”, which means you have to use the same license. (My images use this as a default, for instance.)

Destination through Books
Germany, Scotland, England and Lebanon are just a few countries that offer a rich history, beautiful landscapes, architecture, food and culture. Travel guides, historical books and novels reveal numerous perspectives of different countries. Ask a librarian, or search your imagined destination under keyword, or subject headings in the library online catalog.
I uploaded some of my travel pictures to Flickr and created a mosaic to be used on a Library Web page promoting travel and destination dreaming!

If you need some inspiration for your Flickr assignments, have a look at the posters in the ALA store: http://www.alastore.ala.org/
Just remember that the ALA themes, like the READ posters, are copyrighted, so don’t duplicate them. The @ Your Library campaign, on the other hand, can be used: http://www.ala.org/ala/pio/campaign/downloadlogos/yourlibrary.cfm

Kathi: Most of the Flickr Toy results will be an image (a poster, etc.), and there will be an “import to Flickr” option on the Flickr Toy site when you finish. Import your new picture into Flickr, then go to the Flickr picture page. Above the picture will be a button labeled “All Sizes”. That page has the static URL for the Flickr picture, in several sizes, which you can use in the Add Image function on the “write a new post” form. There is also HTML code to paste into the HTML view of the “write a new post” form. Both do the same thing, but I find the Add Image function to be easier.

Digressing a bit, but has anyone had experience with Animoto? I was looking at the new construction blog on the Darien library site and they had a set of animated photos created through this.
June 11, 2008 at 5:03 pm
I was looking at Animoto, but got turned off by them asking for my birth *date*. I can understand them wanting a birth year, but why do they need the day and month, too? I share a lot of information on the net, but birthdate is used too often as a security component for me to be happy giving it out to a non-financial or -employment related site. Their explanation gives no reason for them to need anything more than a year, which is pretty publicly available (see http://zabasearch.com/ as an example).

I chose to do a magazine cover to promote our summer reading programs. I’m pretty happy with the overall effect, but would have liked to have been the one to crop the photo.

Here is the slideshow I created showing a patron how to make a request for a library item from home. I used Snag It to capture the screen images (I should have taken the time to make them a uniform size) and then uploaded the images to my flickr account. I then went to bighugelabs to create the slideshow. I’d like to have this slideshow inserted into a library blog or on the website to help patrons request items.
I’m sure there must be a link on the flickr site to bighugelabs, but I couldn’t find it or a link to toys, so I went there with Rebecca’s link. I bet there is an easier way I couldn’t figure out.

I uploaded lots of pictures to flickr and made some of them public. One of them I made into a jigsaw puzzle and then added some text meant to encourage reading. It should be at this site:

I think. I’m curious to know what other people see since I see many pictures that only I should be able to see.
